Embroidered cotton bookmark makes a great little gift for book lover or seamstress. The hand-embroidered nakshi kantha design is finished with a tassel. An accompanying paper explains nakshi kantha as “a woman’s canvas or diary, created to tell her own story and the story of her family through thread.”

Nakshi kantha is a traditional form of embroidery in Bangladesh. Girls learn nakshi kantha from their mothers as they are growing up. Most of the designs and motifs are taken from poetry and folk stories, involving flowers, leaves, birds and plants. Villagers use simple kantha stitching—less elaborate than nakshi kantha—to decorate blankets, bed sheets, pillow covers and napkins. Grandmothers stitch kantha on soft fabrics for newborn grandchildren.
