Description

Lombok potters make this uniquely beautiful pie dish with fluted edge and hand-etched designs. Hand-formed by women potters of Lombok, Indonesia, this dish is low fired over a wood fire and packed in straw. Before firing, Lombok pottery is burnished with a mixture of fine clay, water and oil, then rubbed with a smooth stone or hard object. This compacts and strengthens the piece’s surface, and creates a sheen that enhances the colors and marks created by firing.

The idea for this pie dish was inspired by a volunteer in the Red Bank, NJ store named Sue. Sue passed away a year ago, but her dedication to Ten Thousand Villages and the artisans' skillful crafts lives on in this beautiful pie plate. For me, this piece serves as a constant reminder of the real connection we have with each other. Sue never got to meet the women who make this pie dish, but she has left an impact on their lives.

So when you purchase this pie dish (which is perfectly functional as well as beautiful!), you are giving a very special gift.
