Ruled for three decades by President Robert Mugabe, the country's first black leader, Zimbabweans suffer an economy in tatters, endemic poverty, an 80 percent unemployment rate and widespread political strife and repression. A post-election 2008 power-sharing agreement has yet to prove that Mr Mugabe will relinquish some of his powers. Prime Minister Designate Morgan Tsvangirai is due to become prime minister under the terms of the agreement.
