We find an oasis of lush and abundant plant-life in the garden of Esther and Moses Kirimi who run the Kichaka Poa Workshop of Nairobi. They grow enough vegetables to feed themselves, their artisans, and their children. And since the couple works primarily in the medium of wood, they plant trees to give back to the earth that has given to them.
Carved using only simple chiseling tools, Moses’ skillful hands transform Jacaranda and Eucalyptus wood into an intricate dream-like scene. Wooden shapes dance along the wall and within the spirals, twists, and curves; we see three abstract masks.
The people of East Africa believe that the telling of a story is just as important as the story itself. We can imagine that the three faces are speaking amongst each other, sharing a story that will last a lifetime, preserved forever in beautiful hand-carved wood. Through the whimsical shapes depicted in this artwork, we can see the jubilant spirit of its creators.
