The sentiment of gratitude is captured through the ancient art of lost wax bronze casting. Makers build a model made of beeswax and encase it in clay. Once the clay hardens, the wax is melted to create a mold of the figure inside. Liquid bronze is poured into the mold and once it sets, the clay is broken to reveal the bronze figure. This technique dates back hundreds of years and provides much needed employment opportunities to people in Burkina Faso.
Atelier de Formation et de Promotion des ArtisansAtelier de Formation et de Promotion des Artisans is comprised of nearly 400 artisans in and around Ouagadougou, the capital city, and several in Bobo Dioulasso, the economic center of Burkina Faso. Most of the artisans work at the Centre National D’Artisanat, the Village Artisanal de Ouagadougou, which was started in 2000 by the Luxembourg government to showcase the work of Burkinabe artisans, and the Maison des Artisans. These three centers double as workshops and exhibition spaces. In addition, a few of the artisans work in their homes.
