The tradition of Haitian cut metal art began in the early 1930s with Georges Liatauds imaginative cemetery crosses crafted from recycled metal. Artisans cut open 55-gallon drums, hammer them flat, and then mark designs on the black metal with chalk. The design is then carved and finished using chisels and other simple hand tools.
Comite Artisanal HaitienThe nonprofit CAH, Comité Artisanal Haitien or Haitian Committee of Artisans, markets and exports crafts made by Haitian artisans, cooperatives and craft groups.
