Burning Incense Safely While incense sticks are less of a fire risk than candles, you should still practice proper safety when burning them. Follow these tips to safely burn incense in your home. Never leave burning incense unattended. Hold the stick by the thinner end, opposite of where you will light it. After lighting the incense, continue to hold it until the flame has naturally extinguished or has been blown out. Allow the stick to smolder for 10-15 seconds before placing it in a holder. Always place incense in a non-flammable incense holder. Keep burning incense away from flammable items like curtains or papers. Be mindful of the areas where ashes can drop. Supervise pets or children who may have access to actively burning incense. Use proper ventilation when burning incense. By following these guidelines you can prevent accidental mishaps like burns and fires.
