Sustainable Harvesting Techniques

Trees are not harmed in the harvesting of their wood, but rather delicately pruned to enhance the health of the tree. Noted for its unique grain pattern, olive wood is desirable for a wide array of items, from simple bowls and spoons to more intricate sculptures, such as nativities.

Cultural Significance

The olive branch has represented a peace offering in stories dating back to biblical times. The image of a dove carrying an olive branch is often depicted at Christmas as a reminder of peace and of God’s love. The origin of this image likely stems from the Noah’s Ark story—where the first sign of land after the storm was in the form of an olive branch delivered to Noah by the dove. It’s only appropriate that this would be the material used to portray the most peaceful night of all.

The origin of these pieces gives them even deeper significance. Nearly all of our olive wood nativities are made in the village of Beit Sahour, just east of Bethlehem, where that first holy night took place.
