My wife bought me this for my birthday, it is just the kind of vintage analog gadget I love. Haven't checked the accuracy yet. Be sure to take DST into account when reading the time!
Quality product, well constructed. There weren’t any instructions with product but was able to go back to website listing to obtain. Obviously doesn’t work without sunlight but my husband enjoyed the gift and it was quite accurate in telling time, except it doesn’t account for daylight saving time.
The sundial compass is very interesting to look at. However, it did not come with any instructions as to how to properly use it and get an accurate reading. My husband just set it on the mantle and has not looked at it since.
Hi Linda! I’m sorry for the lack of explanation for how the Sundial Compass works. Here are some instructions to help you out:
-Your compass/sundial instrument will arrive collapsed. The small slide on the side needs to be freed to be able to use the compass. The three feet should be adjusted to level it.
-Flip up the “gnomon,” the triangle shaped center piece. Move the curved side piece into an upright position. Swing the entire round top of the sundial up until the side number corresponds with the latitude of your location. Once the compass is set to north, the shadow of the gnomon will fall on the approximate time.
-Be aware that computers and cell phones will affect the compass’s ability to read true north.
