Meet The Maker

Dolores Quivac Sapalu, maker of the Medallion Necklace, is 26 years old and works with design, quality control and distribution of materials at Creaciones Chonita in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. We asked her to tell us a little bit about her life and the creation of the Medallion Necklace and Earrings. Here’s what she had to say:

What do you like best about making this product?

I always like new designs. The process for this item is different because the same person who starts making it must also finish it. The reason is because when wrapping the wire, no two people have the same concentration, so to keep the look consistent, the same person must see it through to the end. What I like most is being able to share my knowledge with other artisans in the experimental work.

How has your life changed since joining Creaciones Chonita?

In the workshop, I learned new techniques and met new people. Then I had the opportunity to develop as a person and obtain the position as coordinator of the group of women. In this stage of my life, I began to have objectives. They always talk about continuing my studies so that I can better my life. Thinking of my future, I decided to study on the weekends so that it wouldn’t affect my weekday wages that I need to support my family.

I quickly learned that I have the capacity to continue my education. Creaciones Chonita has supported me and made it possible for me to study on Saturdays. I graduated in 2014 as a counter-oriented computer expert. This year, I began studying law at the University of Mariano Galvez de Guatemala. I am thankful to God for the opportunity for academic growth through the support of a decent job in handicrafts that has been a source of income that has covered my studies and been flexible with my time. I am equally thankful to you, Ten Thousand Villages, and the customers that buy our products which we produce with care and affection.

Is there anything else you want customers to know about you, your life, or your work?

I am very thankful for the people that support our group by purchasing our handicrafts. With your purchases, we have the opportunity to change our lives and excel academically. Our children have opportunities to go to school and obtain education and have new ideals with a better quality of life. On a personal level, I am proud of my work and what I have been able to accomplish at this stage in my life! Greetings to all and thanks.
