Cameroon is a country of variety. Hills, rainforests, and savannahs shape regional landscapes. Cameroon's history, like that of many African nations, was shaped by British and French colonialism. Most people speak at least one of the two official languages (English and French), and more than 100 dialects are spoken. Islam and Christianity are practiced throughout Cameroon, as are traditional indigenous religions.
Once considered prosperous, Cameroon suffered an employment drop and food shortages in the 1980's and is still struggling to recover.
